This can be a tricky situation – and we handle this numerous times in Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky.
If the garage door is the only entrance into the garage, the first option is to drill a hole in the door and try to hook the release cord on the opener so the door can be manually opened. The hole can then be filled with an outside disconnect lock.
An outside disconnect lock is actually a great idea and should always be installed on a garage that only has one way in.
If there is no disconnect cord to hook to on the garage door opener, more drastic measures may be needed to get you in, including cutting a large hole in the door, the replacing a section or the entire door.
